Recap:

52 carswereon hand for ToledoSpeedway’s BudweiserGlass City200. Steve beingthe 2002 & 2003 winnerof the event was trying to make history as the only person to win it3 yearsin a row. The only person to win 3 timesis the legendary BobSenneker butnoonehaswonit 3consecutive years. Steve wastryingto make history.

In practice on Saturdaythe car wasn’t that fast. Not as fast as it needed tobe as theteam knew there wereguys on the track 3 to4 tenths quicker andthe big thinganymore atanytrackseems tobe makingthe inversion.Stevewent out in the2nd qualifying heat and ran a 15.46. It would end up putting Steve 14th out of 52 carsattempting to make the 31 car show. Fast time would go to the #20 ofDon St. Denis at a blistering 15.05.Weknewwe had ourwork cut outforus trying to beable to compete with the times the guys were posting. We had a good handling car and in 200 laps anything can happen.Weended upmissing the inversion, as the inversion with St. Denis’sroll of the dicewith 6 addedtoit would endupat 10.Steve would start 14thbehind some ofthe best super late model drivers in thecountry. Steve and the team knew at thatpoint the taskat hand to win a 3rdGlassCity200 wouldbe ahard one to do but with racing anything can happen.

The #24 of Dave Kuhlmanwould leadthestellar31 car field to the green flag andthe 16th annual Budweiser Glass City 200 was off and running. Davewould lead until lap 8 until electrical problems forced him to pit. The lead was then takenover bythe#0machine of Johnny Belott Jr. Johnnywouldlead until lap32 when he and the #86 of Scott Stovall, a lap car, got together. Neither would agree to whowas atfault forit so underToledorules both go to the back of the field. Johnny was not happy with the calland decided to go tothe pits and retire from the event. The lead was now the #71of Harold Fair Jr.’s who would lead until the 100-lap break. While all this wasgoing onSteve was picking off cars one by one and at thebreak was in4th place from his14th startingspot.

After the100lapbreak where the teams were allowed to change tires, fuel the car, and make any chassis adjustments FairJr. would leadthe next29laps of the final segment with the #47 ofFreddy Campbell in 2ndand Stevein 3rd. Steve wouldthenmake hismove to thefronton lap 129. A move that will have peopletalking aboutit for a long time. Steve would passCampbell in2nd and Fair Jr. in1st by going tothe outsidein turns #1 and#2and motoring by both to takethe lead. From thereStevebasically checked out. At some points his lead was as much as 20 car lengths over 2nd place.Steve would thenjust conserve his tiresandcommunicate with his team on the radio on how things were goingaround him.Steve would never be challenged forthelead as he wouldgoon to make history. The first driver ever to win 3 consecutive BudweiserGlassCity 200’s, 2002,2003, & 2004. The team would liketo thank everyone at ToledoSpeedway and taking Outlaw Super LateModel toits highest level. Wewould alsolike to thankour sponsors for being with us thisseasonand sharing our success in 2004, we couldn’t have done it without you.

With the inversion, Steve would start the 100 lap racein the 10th position. When thegreen flag dropped Steve wasted little time charging through thepack as in 1 lap hewasabletopass 3 cars. As he was working hisway to the front, the #5of John Doering got the lead on lap 35 and Steve knewhe had to chargeto thefrontfast and not let Johnget a big lead. In one ofthe bestraces sofar at AutoCitythisyearforthe Supers,Stevetriedthe high side in turn #3 to try and getby raceleader Doeringa number of times. The most exciting movecame when Steve dropped a tire offthe back stretch and what appearto be a very scary moment thatcould have leadtoa very seriousproblem, but Stevewas able to save it andcontinue onstill in 2nd place. Withthe laps running out, Steve hadtosettle fora hard fought 2nd place finish.

Recap: The sun was shiningon whatwastobe a beautifuldayand thepits were filledwith18cars for the1st annual Pat BourdowMemorial100/MainEvent Series race. Patraced out at Tri-City in theSuper LateModel division as well as making itup to the ASA ranks, but we lostPatto cancer, sothis race was atribute to agreat competitor ofours and friend. Thepits werefilled with the Main Event regulars (Ice, Rohrer, Whipkey) versus the Tri-Citylocals (Sauve, Meylan,Bond) and a fewnewcomers for 2004 at Tri-City with the #51of BillHiggins and the#11of JayReinboldcoming out to compete. Steve would startthe day out great by setting fasttime by turning alapof 17.44 justbeating the#72 greenmachineofRay Meylan whoalso set a fast lap of 17.49.

Stevewouldstart the racein 7thposition with the inversion and that would put the#1r of NormDavis driving Todd Rosebrugh´s car on the pole. Norm would leadthe field of 18to thedropof thegreen flag and theywere off. Everyone wanted to lead lap 4as that was one of the bonuslaps that offered $500 to the guy leading it. The #4 ofBill Bond would get thathonoras Bond buildup agood lead at this pointin therace with the#72Meylancoming fast inhis 2nd place spotbut that would be short livedas trouble occuredfor Meylan asengine trouble wouldend his day early. Bond would suffersimiliar fate as he was leadingthe race onlyto be involved in acrash on lap 24 that hecould notavoid as the#17 of SteveTabor spun in turn1. Jay Reinbold wasalsoinvolved in it but would not substain anydamageand hewas able to continue on. Bond headedto the pits torepair hiscar and was able toreturn but 2 laps down to thefield. Atthis point, Stevewhowasslowly and quietly workinghis wayto the frontinherited the lead (due to Bond´s misfortune) onlap 25and from there checkedout on the fieldand was abletogo at thisown pace and was nevered pressured for the top spot. Stevewas able toalsoleadonlap 44which also included a $500 bonusas that was Pat´s car number when he competed so it was nice to leadthat lap in honor of Pat.It looked tobesmooth sailing forthe#97 orangemachinebut onlap 95, Stevestarted smoking whichbrought outtheyellowflagfor a "safety caution" and the Main Event crew checked out therace leader and determined Steve was notleakinganything on the track soheableto continue and keephisspot. It turnedout to be apower steering hosehad ruptureddumpingout all thefluid on the chassis andexhaustbut it being a low volumesystem, the fluidwas emptied and gone within 2 laps. Stevewas ableto continue onbut without the enjoymentof havingpower steering. On therestart,Steve wouldleadthe remaining 5laps and wasable to capturethe 1st annual Pat BourdowMemorial 100.

Recap: Where are the Supersat?Thatis the question as only7 carswould showup thisweek and the weather was extremely nice for racing. Not sure where the cars are at as our team is doingitspart to helpthe trackout, whether its the new pay outstructure ornot being able tohandle thetricktrack, the team would like tosee more carsoutthere to compete with.On thisnight, the team struggledduringpractice as the car was missing at topendspeed andweended up spendingmore time ontrying to get the cartorunright, thenbeingabletoworkonthechassis. At firstwe thoughtit was afuelproblem so wechecked thefuel filerand the replaced carburetor and thatdidn´t do it.Next was thefuel pump, that didn´thelp iteither. Our next attemptto get rid of themiss wasto checkout theelectrical system. We lookedatthespark plugs and wires. We didfind one bad wireand replaced it but even in our heat racewhichwe wereableto winthecar still hadamiss in theengine. Atthispoint we decidedto change theMSDignitionbox andcoil hopingthiswouldcure theproblem and help us win our 5thfeature. Upon doingthe repairs, wequestioned the battery strength andwebelieve that was theculprit. Abatterygoing dead and analternator not chargingcorrectly. With nospare battery inthehaulerallwe could do was chargeit asmuchas we could beforethe featureand hope thecarhad enough voltage to handle 25lapsonthe tricktrack.

We would start the25 lap feature inthe 6th position andfromthedrop of flagmanKen Fairchild´s greenflag Steve was off. Itturnedintoanother Meylan andSauve battle as thetwowould charge to the front earlyon in the 7 car field.Onthisnight andwith 10 less lapsthan normal Steve would have to settlefor 2nd placeina car thatwas loose. Aftercomingin from the feature Steve´s windshield and frontend were covered inoiland mayhavebeen the reason he couldn´t get the car towork well and set Ray up for apass. In the end it wasa hard earned 2nd place with allthe teamchanged andhopefully with anew battery, the car will bereadyforTri-City againonJuly 29th andbeable tofind victorylaneagain.

Starting in the 8thpositionand missing the inversionby1,made handlingallthat moreimportant to take the car tothefront, and passingthe night´s7 fastestcars.Stevestruggledwith handling problemsfrom thedropof the greenflag andthrough out the featureandwas only able to get a6thplace finishbut considering how bad thecar´s handling was,the finish wasn´t allthat bad.Theteam will re-groupand determinewhat thecar needs to make it capable ofwinningandtaking the bountyasAuto Cityowner Joe Dewitteis leaving the bounty standunitlsomeone can beatJohn Doering Jr.The teams hopes to do that and willbe ready againforRound #6 on July31st.
